Residency Program
The Community
The campus of the University of Florida is located in Gainesville, which is in the rolling highlands of North Central Florida, midway between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean and about 60 miles from each coast. It is 70 miles from Jacksonville, 120 miles from Orlando, and 130 miles from Tampa-St. Petersburg. This location provides the opportunity for uncrowded living, while affording easy access to large metropolitan areas. The weather is moderate. During the months of May through October, temperatures range from 70° to 95°F. From November through April, temperatures are more variable, ranging from 35° to 85°F. The urban population is approximately 135,000.
The University of Florida is the largest (>40,000 undergraduate students) in the Southeast and among the five largest in the United States. It contributes greatly to the civic life of the community and provides many scholastic advantages. A full range of social, athletic, and cultural events occurs regularly within the academic atmosphere provided by the university and nearby community colleges
Gainesville has many attractive residential communities within easy driving distance of the medical center. Average rentals for apartment developments that cater to young professionals range from $800 to $1200 per month. Most of the residential areas include single-family homes in the price range of $150,000 to $200,000.
North Central Florida contains some of the most beautiful country in the United States. Thoroughbred horse farms and cattle ranches dot the countryside. Gainesville is blessed with many nearby lakes, springs, and rivers, and is appropriately conscious of its ecologic heritage. Thus, there is ample opportunity for recreation. Many residents are water-sport enthusiasts and use their free time for swimming, water skiing, sailing, fishing, and scuba diving. Golf, tennis, cycling, jogging, and racquetball occupy others.
Health Science Center & Shands Clinics
The Health Science Center is located on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville. The Health Science Center houses in a single, modern, integrated facility the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Health Related Professions, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, and Shands Hospital. Shands, with 588 beds, and the VA Medical Center (located across the street) with 379 beds, provide the latest in state of the art inpatient and outpatient services. The Health Science Center also has one of the largest medical libraries in the Southeast, with a collection of more than 230,000 volumes and 2,000 scientific journals.
The department is the primary source of obstetric and gynecologic care for many women in the rural counties surrounding the University of Florida and is the tertiary level referral center for high-risk obstetrics, oncology, urogynecology and endocrinology patients in the northern portion of the state. A wide variety of patients is, therefore, available to the resident physician.
All of the OB/GYN inpatient facilities are located in the patient care building of Shands Hospital. The most modern equipment has been installed to accommodate the full spectrum of patient needs. Birthing rooms, rooming-in facilities, cesarean delivery rooms, counseling areas and conference rooms are all included in the obstetric wings.
The outpatient facilities are located in the Medical Plaza building, located two blocks from the hospital. The Women's Center has 11,430 square feet of space, housing 21 examination rooms, 3 procedure rooms, physician offices, a conference room, and prenatal diagnosis and testing center.
