Obstetrical Ultrasound

Four maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and three registered nurses who are also registered diagnostic medical sonographers, provide service and teaching in this area. Six ultrasound units with linear, curvilinear, sector, vaginal probe, doppler and color flow doppler are available daily. Four units are located in the Medical Plaza and Park Avenue Women's Center, two are utilized in Labor and Delivery and the Emergency Room at Shands Hospital, and three units are at outlying public health departments. In addition, a portable ultrasound machine is available for other outlying clinics. Our ultrasound service is the referral center for North Florida. Targeted ultrasound evaluation of fetal anatomy and physiology are performed as well as specialized procedures such as percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS), chorionic villus sampling (CVS), amniocentesis, color flow doppler, and intrauterine transfusion (IUT). Fetal cardiac evaluation is done in conjunction with an attending physician in the Division of Pediatric Cardiology.
