Welcome From Our Director

The Division of
Maternal-Fetal Medicine is primarily responsible for the development of programs that deal
with all aspects of obstetrics, including prenatal care, prenatal diagnosis, childbirth
and the postpartum period. The division specializes in prenatal diagnosis and
high-risk pregnancy management. The four members of the division are board-certified
in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. There is a three-year fellowship program in this
division.
To specialize in Maternal-Fetal Medicine now requires a
three-year fellowship program with emphasis on research, patient care and education.
The fellowship program prepares the individual to manage the pregnancy of women
with high-risk conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and other medical problems.
Women who have had specific pregnancy complications such as multiple gestation,
severe preeclampsia, and placenta previa, are also managed by our group. We are
actively involved in prenatal diagnosis through the use of ultrasonograpy and perform such
invasive procedures as amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, percutaneous umbilical
blood sampling and in-utero shunts. The physicians in our division provide care both
at the Park Avenue Women's Center and at the Women's Health Group at the Medical Plaza.
We also supervise the care provided by the residents, nurse-practitioners, and
certified nurse-midwives at the Medical Plaza and in various health departments.
Through our contract with Children's Medical Services, we provide consultative services,
ultrasound, and genetic counseling to the health departments in Marion, Lake, and Citrus
counties. Our staff includes a genetic counselor, registered diagnostic
ultrasonographers, diabetes educator, nurse-practitioner, certified nurse-midwives and
prenatal diagnosis nurse-coordinator.
