Teaching and Research

Teaching

The Division of Gynecology has placed a strong emphasis on education, as evidenced by the number of teaching awards received over recent years. Weekly Gynecology conferences include discussion centering on assigned reading in Telinde's Operative Gynecology and Droegemueller's Comprehensive Gynecology; topics in vaginal and pelvic reconstructive surgery are discussed at a Monday evening conference. The weekly Urogynecology conference emphasizes case discussion and is mandatory attendance for all residents and students on the gynecologic rotation. In response to this focus on both student and resident education, members of the Division have won the Hippocratic Award for Teaching Excellence, the College of Medicine Clinical Teacher of the Year Award, the J. Lee Dockery Teaching Award, the Golden Apple Award, the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Student Teaching in OB-GYN.

Research

Divisional research has been primarily clinical, with emphasis on the relationship of bacterial vaginosis to ASCUS Pap smears, the association of bacterial vaginosis to upper genital tract infections, and the identification of molecular markers of peritoneal adhesions. Urogynecologic research has involved the role of pelvic floor training and stimulation in the management of stress incontinence.
