John D. Davis, M.D.
The director of the Gynecology Division is Dr. John Davis. Dr. Davis graduated from Bowman Gray School of Medicine (Wake Forest University) in 1986 and completed his residency training at the University of Florida in 1990. He then spent four years in Germany serving in the United States Army before returning to U.F. to join the faculty. In January of 1995 Dr. Davis was appointed Director of Gynecology. In addition to leading the Division, Dr. Davis is the Associate Director of Undergraduate Medical Education of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Davis’ primary professional interests are general gynecology, surgical gynecology, and medical education. As a member of the faculty of the University of Florida, Dr. Davis is able to pursue all of these interests. He spends half of his time seeing private patients and half of his time teaching residents and medical students in the operating room, outpatient clinics, and during conferences. Dr. Davis provides both basic and advanced gynecologic services for women from the North Central Florida area, from throughout the state of Florida, and from South Georgia. Dr. Davis specializes in gynecologic surgery, and is able to offer non-surgical and minimally invasive surgical options for women with abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse.
As an educator, Dr. Davis is responsible for teaching Obstetrics and Gynecology residents the full breadth of outpatient and surgical gynecology. He works closely with the residents in the operating room one day per week and teaches them basic and advanced gynecologic surgical techniques such as operative laparoscopy, vaginal and abdominal hysterectomy, repair of pelvic organ prolapse, as well as anti-incontinence procedures including Tension-free Vaginal Tape. In the clinic, Dr. Davis is responsible for teaching the residents how to manage general gynecologic problems; he also teaches the residents how to perform colposcopy and loop electrosurgical excision procedures. Dr. Davis also teaches in two conferences. One is a weekly reading conference where the students and residents discuss a chapter from a textbook on operative or outpatient gynecology; the other is a weekly preoperative conference with the gynecologic faculty to review cases submitted for surgery.
Throughout his career Dr. Davis has been recognized as an excellent medical educator. He received the Obstetrics and Gynecology Resident Teacher of the Year Award every year of his residency. As a faculty member, he has served as advisor to two fourth-year medical school classes. In 1997 he received the Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics Excellence in Teaching Award and in 1998 received the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology J. Lee Dockery Teaching Award. In 2000 he received the College of Medicine’s highest award, the Hippocratic Award. This award is given to the faculty member who, in the eyes of the graduating class, has been their most dedicated and inspirational teacher. In April of 2002 Dr. Davis was inducted into the University of Florida Society of Teaching Scholars, a society whose members have demonstrated interest in and dedication to medical education.
